Market value is a snapshot of what strangers will pay today. It moves with hype, with population reports, with what sold on eBay last Tuesday at 2am. It is not a judgment of your taste or your memories. When our appraiser says $40, it's answering one narrow question: what would this trade for, now, between people who don't know you?

Here's what knowing the real number does for you. It tells you what to insure. It tells you what deserves grading fees and a security seal, and what should just live in a binder and be enjoyed. It stops you from being lowballed by a buyer who knows the number when you don't. And sometimes it surprises you in the good direction — the garage-sale box with one card worth more than the rest of the collection combined.

Appraise everything worth over a hundred bucks to you, in dollars or in memory. Information is never the enemy. The enemy is finding out what grandpa's coin was worth from the person who just bought it from you.
